A new study published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics found that among parents of nearly 600 children between ages 2 and 5 with autism (453 kids) and developmental delays (125 kids), 40% reported using homeopathic remedies, mind-body medicine, melatonin and probiotics in an attempt to relieve some of their children’s symptoms and even prevent some of the condition’s behavioral problems from progressing.

Obamacare Will Cover Breast Cancer Prevention Drugs

The move comes after the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)–a government commissioned panel of experts who review all available research on health issues–stated that women who are at a high risk for breast cancer can benefit from taking drugs like tamoxifen and raloxifene to prevent the disease. Based on this conclusion, under the Affordable Care Act, which emphasizes preventive care, these drugs must be covered by insurance, with no extra cost to female patients.

Thank You, Surgeon General: Tobacco Control Has Saved 8 Million Lives

On Jan. 11, 1964, Dr. Luther Terry, the U.S. surgeon general of the U.S. Public Health Service, released The Surgeon General’s report of 1964, the first such analysis that laid out the effects of tobacco and smoking, and spurred initiatives to lower tobacco use among Americans. Its conclusions were built on more than 7,000 studies on smoking and concluded for the first time that smoking caused lung cancer in men, and likely in women, and that lighting up was the most likely cause of chronic bronchitis.

Feds Crack Down On Deceiving Weight Loss Products

Another company, L’Occitane Inc., sold Almond Beautiful Shape and Almond Shaping Delight skin creams advertised as body slimming. The company will pay $450,000 to settle with the FTC. LeanSpa will also give $7.3 million to the FTC in its settlement over promoting acai berry and colon cleanse weight-loss supplements on fake news sites. And HCG Diet Direct, which marketed liquid drops with hormones advertised as helping users lose weight, will hand over $34 million to the FTC.
